Good Health starts in the Home

Tuesdays at FAcT (Families in Action Together) are special mornings where community members gather to discuss pressing issues that affect them.
Today’s topic was housing.
We were joined by Jackson Caines from Harrow Law Centre, who spoke about the Law Centre's work supporting families in securing healthy homes. Jackson explained how poor housing conditions—such as damp, mould, or pest infestations—can seriously impact a family’s health, and how the Law Centre can help those affected.
Sitting in a circle, everyone listened attentively as Jackson passionately emphasized that “good homes create health.” He outlined how the Law Centre could assist with housing disrepair, and how, if necessary, they could signpost to other services for further help. The discussion was interactive and felt like a safe space for everyone to share their experiences. Some shared personal stories of overcoming difficult rental situations, while others sought advice on how to get help.
One powerful moment was when Jackson spoke about the collective work done on the Bancroft Estate in South Harrow. He recounted how tenants had been living in homes with no insulation, which left them cold, spending excessive amounts on heating, and facing dangerous mould issues. With the support of Harrow Law Centre and community campaigning, the first homes have now started to receive insulation.
“How else would change happen without a collective voice?” Jackson asked, leaving a lasting impact on the group.
The FAcT group is also a space for that collective voice. It’s inclusive, warm, and impactful.
After the discussion, everyone gathered for a meal of lentils prepared by Aghileh (our founder), with bread brought by another participant. The room filled with laughter and a shared sense of community.
After all, Good health starts in the home—and also in our community support groups.
